Ms. Stephanie Kopelousos
Secretary of Transportation
Florida Department of Transportation
605 Suwannee Street
Tallahassee, FL  32399-0450

Dear Secretary Kopelousos:

As a resident of Florida, I am firmly opposed to the Florida Department of
Transportation’s plan for a 50-year lease of Alligator Alley, which would
effectively sell off this critical roadway to foreign interests.

The Interstate Highway System, of which this is a part, was constructed to
enhance our national security, as initiated by President Eisenhower in the
National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956.  Eisenhower argued
for the highways for the purpose of national defense.  He felt that it was essential
for the military to have good roads to be able to quickly transport troops,
supplies, and armaments around the country.  This is a vital transport link that
cannot be turned over to the control of foreign companies or governments.

The highway was built with taxpayers’ money and should remain under the
control of the taxpayers’ duly elected representatives.  It is an investment that
belongs to the people.  Also, if it is economically attractive enough for a private
company to lease, operate, and collect tolls, then it is most certainly should be
beneficial for the state of Florida to do likewise.

Please stop all consideration of leasing the people’s assets to private and/or
foreign interests.

Sincerely,
